We, the creators of this video, are students at NOVA High School on the north side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We range in age from 14-19 and worked together over the course of a semester with the community arts program H20 Peace Propaganda Project to write the lyrics, produce the beats, and film this music video. It was filmed in Red Arrow Park, where Dontre Hamilton was killed by a member of the Milwaukee Police Department on April 30 of 2014. We want people to continue telling his story as well as our stories.
When we hear leaders and the media talk about police harassment and violence in our neighborhoods, we rarely hear from the actual community. We are the ones experiencing unfair and often abusive policing, yet nobody asks us how we feel about the way our city’s police department is treating us on a daily basis. We do have a voice! We created this video to speak both for ourselves and for the youth in the 53206 and other targeted zip codes who have been silenced by an unjust system. We’re speaking up, are you?
